The Academy of Blended Learning Education (ABLE) offers a flexible and innovative online learning program designed for students in grades 1–5 within Washington County Public Schools (WCPS). ABLE provides a fully virtual educational experience that combines high-quality instruction with the flexibility of learning from home.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

Virtual Learning Experience: Students attend classes Monday–Friday from 7:55AM–2:25PM using Google Meet, engaging in real-time instruction led by certified WCPS educators.
- Curriculum/Instruction: ABLE follows the WCPS Essential Curriculum, ensuring alignment with Maryland state educational standards and assessments.
- Support: Our dedicated team of teachers includes lead educators and support staff who facilitate student learning through synchronous lessons and personalized weekly conferences.
- School Activities: Students enrolled in ABLE have access to select activities typically offered at their home elementary school or Smithsburg Elementary.
- Technology: Each student receives a WCPS-issued Chromebook to access classes and assignments, requiring reliable internet access at home.
- Schedule: ABLE follows the WCPS calendar for holidays, breaks, and other scheduled days off. In case of inclement weather or emergencies, ABLE adheres to WCPS delay or early dismissal schedules.
ASSESSMENTS:
- In-Person Assessments: Maryland state assessments are conducted at a central location at or near our Center for Educational Services (CES) in Hagerstown, ensuring compliance with state educational requirements
ENROLLMENT & COST:
- Rolling Enrollment: Interested families can apply at anytime
- Cost: ABLE is free for all Washington County residents
